Traveling With the Kids
A family vacation is a special time in which to make wonderful memories and enjoy time away from the stress of everyday life. Enjoying a destination far from home is a blessing that should be appreciated. However, when you have a car full of children to tow along with you that can be a challenge. Keeping the kids entertained in the car requires some planning ahead and creativity. Nobody wants to listen to kids fighting and whining when they could be quietly entertained. Traveling with children can go smoothly.
Never leave home without a fair supply of healthy snack foods and drinks. It's likely that the kids will be complaining of hunger before you've even left your home town so plan ahead for the munchies. Stock a small cooler with ice packs to keep everything fresh. Items like fruit, granola bars or cheese and crackers all make great snacks that are relatively mess free. It might be best not to bring messy food in the vehicle. A spill could get smelly and delay your progress. Juice boxes are always a safe bet as well as water bottles with a cap that closes tight.
Leaving early for your trip is usually a good idea. If you get everyone into the car early enough then you might be able to get the kids to sleep for a few hours while you drive. It also helps you made good time so that you can hopefully reach your destination before dark. Pack the car the night before you plan to leave so all you have to do in the morning is get the kids all buckled in.
Many parents have already discovered the joy and convenience of having a DVD player in the car. It can keep the kids quiet for hours on end. Bring a stack of their favorite movies or buy a couple of new ones especially for the trip. It will give them something to look forward to and keep everyone quietly entertained rather than arguing or complaining. Some DVD players make it possible to hook up a video game system as well which could be another fun alternative.
Older children might appreciate a good book to read while stuck in the vehicle. Others may like coloring books and markers to hold their attention. These items are great for older children that are not stuck in a baby seat or booster seat. Smaller kids might prefer a new toy that is interactive somehow. It should be something that they can easily hold and work themselves.
Make sure to schedule in regular bathroom breaks. Children cannot wait as long as adults to use the restroom so don't get caught in between towns with a child that is crying to use the facilities. Mapping out bathroom stops ahead of time can help you to plan how often you will be passing through an area with bathrooms. Traveling with the kids can actually be a lot of fun with the right planning and a positive attitude.
